5 Surprising Foods That Can Help Prevent Varicose Veins

purple-grapes-553463_1280Balanced nutrition has long been considered one of the most important factors in preventing illness and maintaining good health. Medical journals are filled with statistics about specific foods and food groups and the impact they have on organs in the human body. High vitamin contents, antioxidants, and minerals all work to help us stay healthy.

The Orlando vein center, Florida Vein Care, wants you to know when you are considering vein health, here are 5 foods that could help:

  1. Purple and Red Grapes: This food is full of antioxidants which have been linked to promoting good heart health. Those same antioxidants are now considered an excellent dietary boost to vein health. Consuming grapes and grape juice is the best way to introduce these vitamins and antioxidants into your body, and drinking a glass of red wine will have the same impact. As with any thing in life, wine must be consumed in moderation, and it is strongly suggested that no more than one glass per day be consumed. A super flavonoid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) is the key here. They are found in the skins and seeds of many fruits and vegetables but are in high content in grapes. OPCs can increase the elasticity and strength of the veins.
  2. Citrus Foods: The high Vitamin C content in all citrus fruits makes them an important dietary supplement in promoting good vein health. Rich in antioxidants and packed with flavor, consumption of citrus is known to reduce cell damage in tissues as we age.
  3. Avocados: Also rich in Vitamin C, avocados boast a high content of Vitamin E.  Vitamin E promotes good circulation, due its anticoagulant capabilities. Be careful not to overdo Vitamin E (and Vitamin K) if you take anticoagulant medication.
  4. Buckwheat: Buckwheat is a food source most folks don’t think about, but should. It is high in another flavonoid called rutin which is an intrinsic component of vascular health. Buckwheat is also high in fiber which helps to keep the body regulated and in turn, keeps everything working well.
  5. Rosemary: Rosemary contains a plant polyphenol called rosmarinic acid. In addition to increasing blood circulation, rosemary can protect against free radical damage. Rosemary is quite a diverse herb. In addition to being a tasty addition to so many recipes, it also contains ursolic acid which helps to strengthen the capillaries.

There are many other foods that contribute to overall vein health and good circulation. Don’t overlook the protective power of the blueberry, blackberry, apple, ginger and asparagus; the list is long and easy to work into your daily diet. Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, and fiber will promote better circulation and vascular health.
