Surprising Side Effects of Varicose Veins

jeans-792030_1280Varicose veins are considered by most to be simple, yet ugly visual reminders that we are advancing in age and that our circulatory system is not performing as well as when we were young. There are many people who seek out varicose vein removal in Orlando for aesthetic reasons. The truth of the matter is that there are some potentially serious side effects to having varicose veins that most people are unaware of. Education about these unknown side effects and knowing the symptoms can ultimately help save your limbs and your life.

Aside from the skin discoloration and bulging of the veins associated with varicosity, there can be a change in the texture of the skin (flaking, tight looking,) swelling of the legs and feet, ulcerations of the skin, neuropathy, restless legs, achiness, itchiness, heaviness, fatigue, and pain. If ulcerations develop and the infection is unchecked, patients can develop cellulitis. Some patients are known to experience hair loss on the lower legs. It has been determined that in certain patients, who have been diagnosed with onychomycosis (foot fungus), are among those who also suffer from varicose veins. It is believed that onychomyscosis is related to the poor circulation in the lower legs and feet. These “side effects” of varicose veins are actually indicators to the more serious underlying issue that is called venous insufficiency.

Venous insufficiency is an accurate description of what it represents: blood that is not moving properly through the veins back to the heart. The valves within the vein walls, which regulate the pressure within the veins, begin to weaken. This allows for a slow build-up or pooling of blood. In essence, the result is high blood pressure within the vein walls. When this occurs, the walls begin to swell, and if left untreated, begins the spread of the varicosity to nearby vessels and the skin. Poor circulation can ultimately result in not just skin discoloration, but in skin breaking down and severe ulcerations.

The cause of venous insufficiency can typically be linked to a family history, obesity, sitting or standing all day, pregnancy, and aging. It is very important to monitor your legs, ankles and feet if you experience any symptoms of spider veins, varicose veins, or venous insufficiency.
