Exercise, Running and Varicose Veins

Once our patients have undergone vein removal treatment, there are always questions about how to best take care of their legs moving forward. Questions such as: “Can I lift weights?” “Should I run?” “What if I have a job that has me on my feet all day?” In this article we’re going to answer these common questions and have you feeling confident in the way you’re caring for your legs.

Common Leg Care Questions

After undergoing vein treatment, many patients are unsure about what they can and can’t do. For those who are generally active, this is information is very important to know.

1. Can I weight lift after?

According to the top Orlando vein doctor at Florida Vein Care, patients may resume weight lifting and other strenuous activity a 5-10 days after treatment. It is important that as you get back into your normal routine workouts, you pay attention to your body. If you are experiencing pains or discomforts, take it easy. Don’t workout as hard as you normally would. Work your way back into it at a rate that your body is comfortable with. It is also important that you wear your compression stockings during work out as you ease back into it.

2. How long do I have to wear my stocking?

Your compression stocking is what gives your leg the support it needs for optimal end results after vein treatment. Wear your compression stocking for at least five days directly following treatment.

3. Is it okay to run?

Runners are very in tune with their bodies. According to the Florida Vein doctor it is recommended that you walk every day following your treatment. However, waiting 5-10 days before getting back into vigorous running is recommended. If you feel your body is up to it after 5 days, feel free to get back into your routine. If you experience discomfort, take it slow. Work your way back up to your normal running distance or speed. Take it at a pace that your body is comfortable with. Be sure to wear your compression stocking during your running.

4. What if I have a job that keeps me on my feet?

If you have a job that requires you to stand in one place for a prolonged period of time, it is important that you move around as much as possible. This will relieve built up pressure in your legs and lessen your chances of experiencing more vein issues.

5. What if I have to sit all day?

If you have a job that requires you to be sitting for the majority of the day, be sure to practice good posture. Sitting straight up with your feet on the ground is the best way to keep your blood properly circulating. Crossing your legs can cause your blood flow to be restricted, thus leading to vein issues.
