What is Your Body Doing While You Sleep and How is it Impacting Your Appearance?

It is commonly said that in order to maintain your youthful and healthy appearance, you must get enough sleep. But why? What are our bodies doing while we are sleeping that has a positive impact on the way we look?

We are going to go over the stages of sleep, and what, exactly, your body is doing in each one.

Stages of Sleep and Their Impact on Beauty

Stage one: This is the stage you are in, when you are just drifting off to sleep. During this stage there are a couple of things that are happening. Your muscles are beginning to relax and you also may be twitching. This is a normal occurrence during stage one. You will also notice that you can be very easily woken up during this stage.

Stage two: This is the longest stage of sleep. During stage two there are many things happening with your body that you have no idea about. Let’s take a look.

Breathing and heart rate are regular. Your body temperature drops. You lose the sense of where you are. Your brain waves begin to slow down significantly. There is no eye movement. Your blood pressure begins to drop. All muscles are relaxed. Tissue grows and repairs itself.

The last part was one of the most significant to your appearance. During this stage of sleep, your tissues are growing and repairing themselves. It is vital that you are getting to this stage of sleep every night in order to keep yourself from looking weathered.

Stage three: Stage three can be identified by a few significant things happening.

Energy in the body is restored. Hormones are released. Brain waves slow down even further. Your brain is active in a dream.

As much as we don’t think it’s true, it is physically visible when you have a lack of energy. Getting to this stage of sleep where your body can restore energy will do wonders for your appearance. Eyes will look brighter, skin will be healthier.

Stage four (REM Sleep):  This stage is practically the polar opposite of stage one. During REM sleep, your eyes dart rapidly back and forth, muscles are completely paralyzed, and you will be experiencing irregular breathing and heart rate. At the end of REM sleep it will once again be very easy to be woken up.

It is good to make it to REM sleep because your muscles are completely paralyzed. This gives your entire body a chance to take have a break and be replenished.
