What to Expect From EndoVenous Laser Treatment

When it comes to varicose veins, management just simply isn’t an option. While for many individuals, these gnarled, enlarged veins are simply a cosmetic concern, for others they cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. In some cases, they can lead to serious problems or indicate serious circulatory problems in the body. Treatment is necessary, and that’s what EndoVenous laser treatment in Orlando is for.

What is EndoVenous Laser Treatment?

EndoVenous laser treatment, or EVLT, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting a thin laser fiber into a varicose vein and allowing the laser’s energy to heal the vein from within. The heat from the laser energy is delivered into the interior of the vein in short pulses, heating up the vein from the inside and causing it to collapse, shrink, and seal itself shut.

What to Expect From an EVLT Visit in Orlando

When you visit our professionals to have EVLT in Orlando, there are a number of things you can expect during and after the procedure. Let’s take a look.

During:

During the procedure, you can expect to feel a little bit of discomfort. It’s done with local anesthesia, so while the area will be numb, you’ll still be awake and feel some pressure. The entire procedure takes one to two hours, and because you can resume normal activities immediately after it is done, you won’t have to take very much time off work.

After:

There may be a little discomfort experienced after your EVLT, along with some bruising. This should disappear after two weeks. To deal with this discomfort, you can take over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, walk, and wear compression stockings. If you experience high levels of pain, which are generally unusual, you may be given a prescription for pain medication.

After the third or fourth day, you may begin to experience a tugging or pulling sensations on the leg that was treated. You may also experience redness, tenderness, and hard, lumpy areas. These are generally normal and part of the healing process. While you may want to relieve the pain with ice or heat, do not apply either to the treated leg.

Although you can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, there are a few things you should know.

  • Don’t run, work out vigorously, or take part in high impact activities for one to two weeks after the EVLT.
  • If you aren’t walking, elevate your leg.
  • Walking will help with the recovery process. Walk for at least 20 minutes every few hours each day.
  • Don’t book a vacation or trip that requires you to fly for at least one week after you’ve had the procedure done.
  • Swimming and hot tubs are not recommended for at least a week after the procedure. Showers are fine, but baths should also be avoided.
  • Wear your compression socks at all times, except when you’re in the shower. These will help with circulation and the healing process. You will be informed when you can remove them permanently.
