If varicose veins in the legs are suspected, the doctor will check your pulse in your feet and legs in several places to study blood flow (or similarly on your arms, wrist and hands.) You may be asked to stand, sit and move into other positions to assist in this analysis. The doctor will also check your legs for swelling, ulcerations, painful areas, and skin discoloration.
Typically, a doppler ultrasound is ordered to further assist in studying the circulation in your veins and arteries. A doppler ultrasound is a specialized ultrasound that utilizes very high frequency sound waves which bounce off red blood cells to create pictures of blood circulating through your blood vessels. The technician will gently squeeze key areas along your leg, ankle and foot to be able to track the changes in your circulation. This tool is very useful in determining the presence of blood clots and reflux near the valves in your veins. This is a non-invasive procedure that takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. If more serious deep vein issues might be a consideration, there are other tests that may be ordered.
