You may be thinking, “Why do I need to improve my blood flow? Doesn’t my body handle that on its own?” While the body does naturally circulate your blood through the body, the sedentary lifestyle that most of us can identify with can lead to poor circulation.
A healthy blood flow leads to a healthier heart, less swelling in the body, reduces the chance of developing varicose veins and more glowing skin. So how does one improve their circulation?
Steps to Improved Circulation
There are a number of things you can do that will lead to improved blood flow. We are going to go over just a few.
1. Exercise: Going for a jog or opting to take the stairs rather than the elevator can have major benefits on your circulation. These types of activities are great for getting your blood pumping all the way from your toes to your head. You don’t have to go for a three mile run, just grab the dog, take him for a jog, you will be doing yourself a favor.
2. Relax: Working long hours and not having time for much else can quickly lead to a stress filled life. It is important to for your circulation and your overall health that you recognize your stress. During moments of heightened stress, practice deep breathing. You may even want to consider taking a few moments out of your day to have quiet time.
3. Stretch: Don’t be shy, everyone wishes they were doing it. Every couple of hours, get up and stretch out your limbs. This is a great practice to get into for those of us who spend 9-5 sitting in front of a computer screen, 5-6 sitting in the car and 6-9 watching TV before we head to bed. Five minutes is a nice amount of time to allow yourself to really get the circulation improving.
4. Eat more spicy food: No seriously. As long as you can handle the heat, spicy food can have a number of benefits on your body. For starters spicy food is effective in preventing blood clots, which I think we can all agree is a nice benefit. Spicy foods are also rich in vitamins A and C. Another great benefit of spicy foods is their anti-inflammatory properties. Spicy food is overall wonderful for your body.
5. Lastly, stop smoking: This is a very crucial point. Smoking constricts your blood vessels. So not only does smoking directly result in cancer of the body, but it also will give you puffy ankles, tired skin, and terrible circulation.
