Sclerotherapy and the Doppler Ultrasound Screening

Living with spider or varicose veins can be frustrating. Maybe you no longer have the confidence to flaunt your legs in shorts or a skirt, or you are dealing with discomfort. The desire to have problem veins removed as soon as possible often supersedes our thoughts about the procedure itself. “Am I a good candidate for this procedure?” “What are the causes behind my veins?” “Does this clinic take the correct measures to ensure the procedure will work?”

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a form of vein treatment meant for larger spider veins and small varicose veins. The treatment is carried out through tiny injections of a solution that baths the inside of damaged veins and causes them to collapse. The treatment is done in 30 minute sessions during which 50-70 veins can be treated.

What is Doppler Ultrasound Screening?

Doppler Ultrasound Screening is a test that is used to examine blood flow in major arteries and veins found in your arms and legs.

During this screening a gel is applied to a hand held device known as a transducer. The transducer then directs high frequency sound waves to the arteries and veins being tested. During this examination blood pressure cuffs are often placed around different parts of the body such as the thigh, calf ankle and areas on the arm. As the transducer is moved over each area of arteries, images are created.

The images created through this examination could reveal health issues such as:

  • Arteriosclerosis of the arms or legs
  • Blood clot (deep vein thrombosis)
  • Venous insufficiency

Once the health of your veins has been established, your vein doctor will better know how to treat you varicose veins so the outcome is more permanent and satisfactory.

What if I Don’t Get the Doppler Ultrasound?

If you are considering opting not to get the Doppler Ultrasound Screening there are a few risks to this decision that could impact your health, the results of your procedure, and the amount of money you are spending.

Without the Doppler Ultrasound, your vein doctor would just be treating the superficial effects of your varicose veins instead of the underlying cause or issue. Without treating the underlying problem the cosmetic improvement seen after treatment will be short lived. After which more veins will pop up.

Because the effects of the treatment will be very semi permanent, you will be spending more time and money having the same procedure done over and over. The Doppler Ultrasound will get to the root of the problem so the effects of your treatment will last much longer and you will experience a much higher level of satisfaction.
