varicose veins before and after svelte

In the recent past, most patients suffering from severe varicose veins had little flexibility in treatments options. Surgical stripping of the veins was typically the only procedure available that would alleviate the pain and swelling of these unsightly atrocities. An incision was made in either the groin or the knee (sometimes both), and the diseased vein was tied off at both ends then cut and removed from the leg. Phlebectomy, as it is known, requires general anesthesia and is typically followed by a lengthy period of recuperation and scarring at the incision sites.

laserEndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) was approved for use by the FDA in 2002 and has rapidly become the most often procedure prescribed for treatment of varicose veins. With EVLT, only a local anesthetic is used to numb the area where a very small laser fiber will be inserted into the diseased vein. The problem with phlebectomy is that many patients are very anxious about procedures that require them to be put under general anesthesia, and the risks associated with general anesthesia are all too real for many people. The use of a topical numbing agent, followed by a local anesthetic, is definitely more appealing. The laser fiber is then guided by ultrasound to the desired location. As it is pulled back through the vein, the laser pulses a specific energy level to the targeted areas along the vein walls. As a result of the laser energy, the vein begins to collapse and seal itself off. The blood normally travelling through the vein is immediately rerouted to closer and healthier veins. The collapsed vein will be reabsorbed by the body. In almost all cases, the patient is able to resume normal activity within 24 hours with minimal to no scarring. Some patients do experience some minor swelling and pain, but these are easily controlled with over-the-counter medication and support hose to alleviate the swelling. More and more, EVLT is the preferred method of varicose vein removal in Orlando.
